SIGHTS MUSEE D'ORSAY PARIS
The Musée d'Orsay is a major museum in Paris, France, situated on a prominent site along the left bank of the Seine River facing the Louvre on the opposite side.

The Musée d'Orsay is considered a masterpiece of industrial architecture and renowned for its large collection of impressionist masterpieces by famous painters such as Monet and Renoir. Other famous artist’s on display include Manet, Cezanne, and Van Gogh.

The museum holds mostly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. The museum currently contains some 2300 paintings, 1500 sculptures and 1000 other objects.

The museum is housed in a grand structure that was once a 19th century railway station known as the “Gare d'Orsay”. The original railway building was constructed for the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans an early French railway company. The structure was inaugurated on the 14th of July 1900, just in time for the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair). By the late 1930’s the building had already become unsuitable for longer modern trains and was put to various alternative uses until finally being abandoned in the 1960’s. In 1977 the French Government decided to convert the former station to a museum. The museum opened in 1986 as the Musée d'Orsay.
